On Sunday, 20 October 2019, Croatian customs officers discovered 331 specimens of Skylarks (Alauda arvensis) in the car compartment of Italian citizen on border crossing Bajakovo between Croatia and Serbia. The driver, an Italian national, is charged with attempting to smuggle endangered bird species.
In addition to the killed birds, Customs also found several electronic devices to lure birds.
The Customs issued a misdemeanor warrant for committing offenses under the Law on Transboundary Traffic and Wildlife Trade, which imposed a fine of HRK 30,000 (app 4000 euro)
It is still unknown where the Italian got the birds, or whether he shot them himself or bought them from poachers. Even which was supposed to be the country of destination for dead birds the suspect did not mention
