“Eleven people under investigation, two thousand live birds seized, over 500 found dead, probably destined for human consumption”.
These are the numbers of the “Lord of the rings” operation carried out by the operational anti-poaching section and animal crimes of the operational department of the CITES carabinieri group, started in Umbria with the collaboration of the forest police stations of Campello sul Clitunno and Cerreto di Spoleto.
These investigations started in September 2019 following an inspection at an Umbrian farm of live decoy birds for hunting purposes. The operation has crushed an activity dedicated to the illegal trafficking of wild birds, also particularly protected species, destined for the market of decoy birds for hunters.
In this crime, which involved several Italian regions, imported specimens, coming illegally from other European countries, were involved.
The crimes charged to the suspects are, in addition to the fraud in trade, bringing in these birds, the animal mistreatment (several specimens presumably captured for a short time, present traumatic lesions to the limbs of exogenous nature due to the manipulation aimed at the ringing of adult subjects), the abusive use and hunting of birds with unauthorized means.
