Unfortunately there is still an important topic floating around in Central Europe, which should not be a problem anymore: illegal poisoning. An incredible big problem for several raptors in Central- and South Europe.
On this picture, which my friend Richard Katzinger sent me this afternoon, one of our tagged Red Kites of this year can be seen. The next case, next to many other definitive cases in eastern Austria. A big shame – the bird was born in Breclav, Czech Republic, tagged by TB Raab in cooperation with our Czech friends, just to be found dead 2 months later on a field in lower Austria. This can and must not be. Clear suspicion: intentional illegal poisoning – why do we believe that: the bird shows typical symptoms of poisoning.
I won’t give up the exact location, to not mess with ongoing police work. In the next years however we will show each location of a poisoning case on a detailed map, to increase pressure on offenders. I would like to thank the hunter association, who took the costs upon them and is strongly against poisoning. I would also like to thank the Landeskriminalamt NÖ and the WWF, who together with Richard Katzinger and my friend Franz Kovacs found the dead bird together with me as well as two more dead birds.
This case once again shows, that tagging of birds is a good method to discovery bird and environment crimes.
