I would like to inform you about an illegal hunting case with involvement of Italian National, next to the Slovenian-Italian Border on the Slovenian side. This illegal hunting was detected by local Hunting Guard and stopped in a joined action of local Police and National Hunting Inspectorate
On the 6th of December 2016 a Hunting Guard of The Korabid Hunting Club found two mist nets on Korabid hunting ground, jest 10 meters away from border with Italy The nets were 1,25 meter and 3,0 meters high and 18 and 30 meters in length. The Hunting Guard also found some empty cages , obviously to put in live birds to lure other birds. About 300 meters from the nets also Glue traps were found.
In a joined action of local Police and National Hunting Inspection, that found place on the same day, a 24 years old Italian National man, who stayed in a holiday home in the village Robidsee as a tourist, was arrested. On the balcony of this holiday home he had a several separated bird cages with 35 live birds (10 different species of singing birds)
8 Carduelis carduelis (Goldfich) , 1 Chloris chloris (Greenfinch), 1 Prunella modularis (Dunnock), 2 Emberiza spp (Bunting) , 6 Turdus pilaris (Fieldfare) , 1 Carduelis spinus (Siskin), 13 Turdus iliacus (Redwing), 1 Cocothraustes cocothraustes (Hawfinch), 1 Pyrrhula pyrrhula (Bullfinch) and 1 Turdus merula (Blackbird).
The birds were seized and immediately released into nature. All equipment, such as nets and cages, were also seized and will be destroyed
The Italian offender was punished by the Hunting inspectorate with 3 penalties; one for illegal hunting, one for using live bird as a bait and one for the use of forbidden hunting equipment. The total penalty was €1260,–
The Police send a report to the Public Prosecutor regarding illegal catching and possession of protected species. This offence has a maximum punishment of 3 years imprisonment
