Last Saturday, 22nd or April 2017, four French Nationals were caught and interviewed by the local police in the Nature protected “Oostvaardersplassen”. They had a bowl of 45 young goose and some goose eggs, which were all seized. At a later stage a judge will decide what punishment these poachers will receive.
These French poachers found out that it is very easy to catch young gees at the Oostvaardersplassen in Flevoland. That’s what Leo Smits, State Forestry enforcement officer says after an interview with the French poachers. According to Smits, forest wardens and the local police are currently alert to French license registration plates .
French poachers catch young geese with the aim of using them as a living bait to shoot bigger wild geese for consumption. The wings of the captive gooses are cut so they cannot fly. Then they are released in a controlled area where hunters are ready to shoot. Once wild geese approach their companions they are shot dead. According to Smits, the French poachers declared they are told by others poachers on how to catch the young geese this specific part of the Netherlands.
