31 March 2017 National Environmental Guard Romania
Representatives from the general headquarters of the Național Environment Guard have joined forces with the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Gendarmerie and the Romanian Society of Ornithology, in order to conduct, during the 11th and 12th of April 2017, control and inspection actions in some of the animal markets and fairs in Bucharest, with the goal to prevent and discourage the illegal trade of bird species protected by the romanian legislation.
Therefore, the combined control teams, comprising 2 environment commissioners, 8 officers of the Gendarmerie and 2 members of the Romanian Society of Ornithology, have raided the following locations: Filaret Fair, Rahova Market, South Market, Obor Market, Crangasi Market and 16th of February Market.
A total of 6 control raids have been completed, and, as a consequence, 9 specimens of gold finch, 7 specimens of siskins and 4 specimens of chaf finch have been seized from the merchants, in order to be released.
The bird specimens have been released in the Carol Park, in the 4th district of Bucharest, in a special equipped area, designed by the Romanian Society of Ornithology, with bird houses and feeding facilities.
Furthermore, in all the raided markets and fairs flyers and posters have been distributed, spreading the word about the Free Wings cooperation program between Romania and Switzerland, endorsed by the Romanian Society of Ornithology.
