With thank to Umberto Gallo-Orsi from LIPU Italy i can send you this information
In the last few days two important operations against poachers took place in Italy:
In Southern Sardinia the Regional Forestry Corps (Corpo Forestale e di Vigilanza Ambientale) has reported to the judicial authorities 10 people accused of poaching birds and mammals. 450 robins and 500 thrushes were seized along with 50 Kg of meat of the endemic Sardinian red deer (Cervus elaphus corsicanus), and 250 snares and mist-nest were removed from the forests with the support of Lipu that is running volunteers camps in the area every year. The Regional Forestry Corps will keep its focus on the area until the end of March when the poaching of migratory birds will decline with the end of the migration of the thrushes.
Keeping goldfinches in cages in Sicily is still very popular (although illegal). The Ballarò market in Palermo is the main source and it is estimated that some 20000 birds are sold each year in Ballarò market alone. Lipu has been monitoring the area in the last year and lobbying the local decision makers and law Enforcement agencies to intervene. The first intervention in 2016 by the Carabinieri resulted in the seizure of 300 goldfinches and the reporting to the judicial authorities of 2 sellers. The goldfinches were soon after released in nature.
