Illegal Cypriot trapper slapped with €21,000 fine
A 67-year-old man arrested by game wardens for illegal trapping on August 9 has been slapped with a €21,586 fine according to a Games Services media release on Thursday.
Game wardens caught the 67-year-old from Alamino, Larnaca inspecting wire snares in a game reserve area which he subsequently admitted to having set.
He is the first person to be charged under the new anti-poaching laws passed by parliament earlier this year.
The fine covers the illegal trapping as well as a number of dead wild hares and birds as well as four mist nets found at the man’s house in subsequent investigations.
The Games Services have also appealed to hunters taking part in the first day of the upcoming hunting season on Sunday to abide by the rules and regulations.
Hunters are reminded that the lighting of fires is strictly prohibited.
