On 18th January 2018 in the Croatian park of nature “Lonjsko polje” park rangers found nine death specimens of common buzzard (Buteo buteo). The dead birds were found in the vicinity of carcases of two calves of domestic cows,
In radius of 100 meters park rangers also found 10 specimens of dead jackals (Canis aureus) – non-protected species. The carcases of two calves were deliberately poisoned with unknown poisonous substance and used as decoy for jackals.
In the past 15-20 years jackals spread their habitats in the north-eastern part of Croatia where it was not common species. These species make a lot of damages on domestic animals and farmers try to reduce their number using mostly illegal ways. Because of that it is supposed that bird of prey were collateral victim of this illegal act.
Because of reasonable doubt for poisoning rangers called police, also veterinary inspection and authorised game keeper.
The specimens of death animals were send in authorised laboratory for analyses of bird-flu and for detect the poison used in this case.
