Unauthorized practice of veterinary medicine, holding and selling of protected species, holding and selling of CITES species without documentation, counterfeiting of official seals
These are the charges pressed as a result of an operation carried out a few days ago by Carabinieri Forestali in collaboration with Lipu volunteers at the al 66th World Show of Cage and Aviary Birds held in Cesena (North-east Italy). 5 people were Arrested, 8 administrative fines given and 50 birds confiscated. The birds included: Blue rock Thrush, Hawkfinch, Siskin, Goldfinch, Chaffinch , Corsican Finch and 8 individuals of Cardinal Lory (Chalopsitta cardinalis), a Parrot from the Salomon Islands in the Pacific. This operation was carried out by Carabinieri forestali from Emilia-Romagna and Veneto regions.
The birds were kept in very poor conditions, in small, overcrowded cages. They were all fitted with aluminium rings that were clearly manipulated. The rings, used to identify captive bred birds, are often open and also fit on wild caught birds. The Cardinal Lory, listed in CITES, where offered for sale without any documentation of their legal origin.
