The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) found 40 live birds in a small bus at Nagylak in Hungary.
NAV staff stopped a Romanian minibus at excise duty at Nagylak. When inspecting the cargo compartment, the financial custodians noticed two boxes between parcels and baggage. A total of 40 live birds –Yellowhammer ( Emberiza citronella) , Goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) and reed bunting (Emberiza schoeniclus) were found in the boxes. The driver transported the birds from Romania to Italy declared that there were quails in the packages.
According to the preliminary expert opinion, the birds are protected, their delivery is subject to authorization.
The driver was unable to present the permission for the birds, so the Tax an Customs handed over this one million forints of good-value bird shipment, and the man was reported to the police for damaging nature.
